When I first began my research of Clark Gable and Carole Lombard, I found a lot of things that suggested how perfect they were as individuals, how perfect they were together and how perfectly in love they were. Delving deeper, I came across several stories that endeared this 1930s couple to me because they were far from perfect – they were real and passionate and in love. They were human.
And they called each other “Ma” and “Pa.”
Clark Gable to the 1930s is what Ryan Gosling is to the present day – or Brad Pitt to the late 90s. It wasn’t uncommon to hear someone say “Who do you think you are – Clark Gable?” to a particularly confident fellow. Lombard was the “Queen of Screwball Comedy,” and both were at the peak of their careers.
“In 1932 they starred together in the Paramount film, No Man of Her Own. A modest success, it featured Carole as a small town librarian who falls head over heels for Clark, a card cheat. Carole was married to William Powell and Clark was preoccupied with British actress Elizabeth Allan, so no sparks flew off camera, although they were cordial. At the film’s wrap party, Carole presented Clark with a ten-pound ham with his picture posted on it…
“On February 7, 1936, both attended a party at Jock Whitney’s house, to celebrate screenwriter Donald Ogden Stewart’s wife’s recent release from a sanitarium, jokingly called “The Nervous Breakdown Party”. Things did not start out well as Carole, as a joke, arrived in an ambulance. Attendants carried her on a stretcher and placed it in the middle of the room. Everyone gasped and gathered around. She jumped up, howling with laughter.
Clark, there with Merle Oberon, was not amused and found the joke in poor taste. Clark and Carole got into a fight that ended with her stomping away from him, furiously proclaiming that he was a stuffed shirt. Near the end of the party, Carole challenged Clark to a game of tennis. There they played, both in evening clothes, playing tennis until it was too dark to see (Carole beat him 8-0). Merle, irritated by being ignored, had someone else take her home and Clark didn’t even notice.
“A couple months later, at the annual Mayfair Ball, Clark and Carole shared a dance. Holding her close, Clark realized she wasn’t wearing any undergarments. Taking this as a green light, he suggested they leave the party and go back to his hotel together. Carole laughed and said, “Who do you think you are, Clark Gable?” This angered him and he left the party. The next morning he awoke to the sounds of birds cooing in his bedroom. Carole had convinced a hotel worker to put them in there while he slept. Tied to one of the birds was a note that said, “How about it? Carole.”” (Dear Mr. Gable)
They were soon inseparable. Carole even took up duck hunting, one of Clark’s favorite pass times.
Carole was madly in love with Clark and she wasn’t about to let anything get in the way of that. Once, Carole stormed onto the set of one of Clark’s movies and demanded that the leading lady, who was rumored to have taken a liking to Gable, was fired. “Get this bitch out of your picture or I’ll take Gable out of it!” she screamed at the director. Gable later bragged about it.
“One-day last week, Clark Gable got into his cream-colored roadster, picked up Carole Lombard and drove 350 miles east to Kingman, Ariz. There they bought a license from an awestruck clerk named Viola Olsen and proceeded to the home of a Methodist Episcopal minister named Kenneth M. Engle. In the presence of his wife and a high-school principal named Cate, who later defined their behavior as “lovey-dovey,” Mr. Engle made Clark Gable and Carole Lombard man & wife. Gable wore blue, Lombard gray.” (Time, 1939)
They settled into a quiet life in rural Encino, California, until tragedy struck in 1942. On a tour selling war bonds, Carole Lombard was flying over Nevada when her plane went down.
“Elaine Barrymore (wife of John) perhaps said it best, “Clark adored her. She was the light in his eyes. He admitted to me that he had always loved the company of ladies and he knew he had a reputation of being a ladies man, but with her it was different. He really was in love. To have her taken from him was like someone ripped out his soul. I saw him periodically for years afterward. The light in his eyes was gone. Even when he smiled. That light never returned.” (Dear Mr. Gable)
Upon his death in 1961, Clark Gable was buried beside the love of his life, Carole Lombard.
Paul Newman & Joanne Woodward were married on January 29, 1958, in a civil ceremony in Las Vegas. Paul presented Joanne with a gift – a silver cup inscribed with the following:
“So you wound up with Apollo
If he’s sometimes hard to swallow
There are a few reasons Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward are among my favorites.
First of all, (let’s be frank here) they’re both really good looking. And they united to create this really beautiful couple, whose love was so apparent – so that years later, I could sit at my desk drinking tea with a sleeping puppy on my lap, sifting through countless old photos of them being beautiful and happy and in love.
“Joanne is one of the last great broads.”
– Paul Newman
“Sexiness wears thin after a while and beauty fades, but to be married to a man who makes you laugh every day, ah, now that’s a real treat.”
– Joanne Woodward
“I don’t like to discuss my marriage, but I will tell you something which may sound corny but which happens to be true. I have steak at home. Why would I go out for a hamburger?”
– Paul Newman during an interview for Playboy when asked about temptation
“People stay married because they want to, not because the doors are locked.”
“My parents are helping us pay for our wedding. The problem is that their vision of our day and our vision are not the same: they’re picturing something big and grandiose; something their friends will be talking about for years to come. My fiancé and I want something intimate and more meaningful to us. How do we plan the type of wedding we want without looking ungrateful?”
Kim Kardashian’s wedding decor via
I sympathize with you – I was in that exact same position. My fiancé and I wanted a small intimate ceremony in a park with a huge pizza party reception. It took a lot of arguing and being called ungrateful before my last ditch effort to have a wedding: I wrote them a letter.
In the letter, I explained what we wanted, why we wanted it and stressed how important it was to have our parents support us through one of the greatest times of our lives. I was honest with my parents in the letter and writing it down made it more difficult to get lost in an argument. My parents were able to read it over and over again, and it got through their heads. It wasn’t all happily ever after with them afterward, but it was much better.
Also, if you have a sibling that does want a grandiose wedding, mention that to them. My sister Tara wants a huge wedding, so I’d always reassure my mom that she’ll have the wedding of her dreams whenever Tara gets married.
So I realize the Fourth is over with for this year and all, but that doesn’t mean we can’t still swoon at pretty, patriotic manicures, right?
Nail art is kind of huge right now and lots of people are going all out with a theme (check out the pictures below if you’re not sure what I’m babbling about). While I’m not exactly sure I want to jump onto the themed nail art bandwagon, I do think you can get endless inspiration from it.

When selecting your bridesmaids’ dresses the cut, style, and shape of the dress shouldn’t be the only important factors when showcasing the most important women in your life. Color can play a major part in making your girls look their best.
The color scheme in your wedding is important but don’t sacrifice your sister’s or best friend’s comfort by putting her in a color that makes her look washed out, sick, or bigger than she is. It’s pretty impossible to find a whole bridal party with similar skin tones, so my advice is to pick a universally flattering color that looks good on your cousin who wears SPF 85 on a daily basis AND your sorority sister who can’t live without her self-tanner.
The most universally suitable colors to choose for bridesmaid’s dresses are navy and purple – close runners-up are crimson and fuchsia. In general, brighter and/or darker colors are the best way to go, consider jewel tones or metallic. Plus, the color contrast really makes your white gown POP!

The only greens that should ever be considered are Kelly and emerald. Most greens can make ladies with olive skin tones look nauseous – especially Celedon or celery! For a fresh and earthy vibe try burnt orange, melon, or coral instead.

I would stay away from pale pink or lavender if any of your girls have a ruddy complexion or rosacea. A hot color right now is blush. I love it for flowers but once the reception starts, your bridal party will probably get flushed from dancing and drinking and can end up turning the same color as the dress.
Pastels tend to make people look washed out and they aren’t the most slimming shades. Let’s take butter yellow as an example. Usually, the only girls that can get away with wearing this color have naturally golden tans and are smaller than a size 8.
Need something blue? How about your whole bridal party? Blue is great because the whole range from baby to midnight is flattering on any and all complexions. Teal is also a beautiful color on everyone and is unexpected.

When in doubt go neutral! My favorite choice is gunmetal or platinum. It’s understated yet serves as a great backdrop for bright or pale bouquets. Of course, you can always pick basic black or chocolate brown.
Maybe if you choose a universally flattering color, when your bridesmaids tell you that they will DEFINITELY wear the dress again, you may actually believe them!
Say it with me: RED is a GO – GREEN is a NO – Don’t Even Consider YELLOW!
Here are a few good examples of how the makeup looked at the trial and through a photographers lens on the big day. Notice how the makeup looks more faded in the natural light and with the correct camera settings. If you are concerned that the makeup looks a bit too bright or dramatic at the trial, rest assured the same makeup will look picture perfect on your wedding day.

November Color Obsession: Chocolate
by Meredith Hayman
Let’s face it, nothing is better than chocolate. Not only is it delicious, the color is creamy, rich, and flattering all at the same time. Why not incorporate this neutral into your wedding décor – pair it with white for a dramatic look or with peach or gold for a romantic vibe.
Chocolate cosmos is a beautiful and modern choice for a bouquet.
This groom looks polished in chocolate but not too formal.
I love this table setting, it’s rustic yet fancy!

“My fiancé has been friends with his groomsmen since he was eight years old. I love them dearly and we get along really well, but I’ve heard rumors about the bachelor party they’re planning to throw—rumors that include both strippers and illegal drugs. How do I let everyone involved know that I think it’s disrespectful and unacceptable without causing a big rift?”
I can totally understand where you are coming from and being concerned, especially about the drugs.
Unfortunately, if you don’t want to start a rift, there is nothing you can do except trust that your fiancé will behave himself and come home in one piece. I assume since you are marrying him, you have established a trusting relationship. How would you feel if you were going out with your friends, doing something your fiancé perceived as “unacceptable” and he made it known to everyone that he felt this way?
I’d speak to your fiancé about it privately if you absolutely feel you need to, but be very careful of the language you use. I would not tell him it’s unacceptable, that word will just evoke a fight. Be honest with him and explain how you feel, but be specific. Why are you so upset about the strippers or the drugs – tell him why and how it makes you feel. But be prepared for him being upset that you don’t “trust” him or are “babying” him. I would absolutely not approach his friends about it because you run the risk of being “that” girl. He’s already ditching his boys to marry you (men really feel this way) and if you’re going to start “bossing” him and his friends around before you’re officially married, it will cause a lot of resentment.
My husband had strippers at his bachelor party too. At first, I was a bit taken aback, but remember it’s his last big night out as a single guy. And don’t forget, those women up there with no clothes on, they do not want some drunk touching them any bit more than you do!
As for the drugs, especially if it’s any major drug, my grandfather used to say “What a drunk man does, he’s thinking about when he’s sober.” Bottom line: you can’t let them know it’s disrespectful without causing a big rift. No huge rift. My advice is to give him something that he wants to come home to – this can be romantic, sexual or ideally, both. Men are visual creatures – so however you handle this situation will be how he remembers you on the bachelor party. Remember that before you “talk” or scold him.
Since you’ll be marrying this guy, you guys should have a way to communicate sticky issues like this. Whenever my husband does something I’m not especially fond of, I always say, “I don’t have life insurance out on you yet, so make sure you come home in one piece.” We smile at each other, both knowing exactly what I mean.

In the hustle and bustle of everyday life, it’s hard to take a minute to appreciate what a wonderful husband I have. Since today is our 8th wedding anniversary, I wanted to let my amazing hubby, Marc, in on a little secret.
I carry a love letter from you in my wallet. The letter is circa summer ’05 and has been in my wallet since the day I received it. I am so grateful to have found the love of my life. Happy Anniversary babe!
My Dearest Boo-Boo,
Every moment of every day, I realize just how much that I love you. Everywhere I turn there is a reminder of just how wonderful you are, from notes that you have left me to things that I see those trigger memories we have shared. Every time, I am reminded of the fact that I am the luckiest man in the whole world. You are everything that I have ever wanted and I cherish every moment that we spend together. You are my world, my partner, my soul. I am so fortunate to have found such happiness with you and want you to know that I do not take anything for granted. I love you the most; you are the best thing that ever happened to me. I am looking forward to spending the summer with you, including long walks in the nice weather, and lots of cuddle time around the apartment. Each of those moments is what I look forward to every minute of every day. It is what wakes me up in the morning¸ keeps me going through the day, and makes me want to get home to you every night.
You are the most special lady in the whole wide world and I hope that I make you feel that way each and every day. I promise to continue to love, honor, and cherish you every moment of every day.
Thank you for loving me and making me feel so complete. I love you the most.

Great Loves: Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy
by Meredith Hayman
Who can ever forget the scene from The Muppet Movie when Kermit and Piggy are running through the meadow into each other’s arms? It was love-at-first-site for this unlikely pair. Then there were years of break-ups and make-ups that left their fans always rooting for reconciliation.
Piggy can be a tough cookie but Kermit always brings out her softer side. It may not be easy being green but it sure is easy to love this Classic Hollywood couple.
